District curriculum leaders recommended Mystery Science to the Boyertown Area School District Board on March 11 as the elementary science curriculum resource to support the new standards and promote student sense‑making.
Mrs. Landis, director of the Office of Teaching and Learning, told the board that the district had approved secondary materials last year and that ESSER funding used for those materials ended in December 2024; elementary purchases would come from the district’s teaching and learning budget. She said a district pilot produced largely positive staff feedback and that the resource aligns with the new science standards’ emphasis on student inquiry and phenomenon‑based learning.
Jen Joyce, elementary curriculum supervisor, walked the board through classroom practice from a second‑grade unit on plant adaptations. Joyce described a routine of an anchoring phenomenon (a short video and guided discussion), repeated opportunities for students to “see, think, wonder,” modeling and hands‑on experiments, and a focus on revising student thinking rather than rote right/wrong answers. She said the program’s digital teacher platform contains videos and planning resources; there is no student digital platform and student pages/printables would have to be produced locally.
Cost and logistics: district staff said Mystery Science is licensed per building and that hands‑on “mystery packs” (grade‑aligned kits) are available. Administration presented an estimated cost that averages about $25 per student for grades 1–5, based on current enrollment and kit pricing (kindergarten kits were not recommended now because of the half‑day kindergarten schedule; administration recommended using mini lessons for kindergarten unless the district moves to full‑day kindergarten). Staff also noted schedule and prep concerns: some elementary classes average 30 minutes for science and several respondents cited teacher prep time and back‑to‑back class schedules as implementation considerations.
Board members praised the pilot. Board member Murphy described the approach as shifting instruction toward iterative question‑generation: “question, answer, and then that answer generates a new question,” he said. Mrs. Joyce said the district will continue to develop teacher supports (printing teacher resources, science notebooks, rubrics and pacing) as part of implementation planning.
Next steps: administration recommended the board vote to adopt Mystery Science and approve materials at the March 25 meeting so the district can implement the program in time for the 2025–26 school year when the new standards become required.
