District details OHS “Husky Hub” plan to integrate Desert Oasis programs, expand student supports

Othello School District administrators presented an update on the Othello High School (OHS) “Husky Hub” plan to integrate Desert Oasis High School (DOHS) students and services into the OHS campus and to expand systems of student support.
Assistant Superintendent Jessica Schenk and Superintendent Pete Perez described the hub as a set of systems, dedicated space and staff assignments designed to increase student belonging and academic support. The hub concept grew from focus-group feedback and a district visit to Sunnyside High School to study its integrated supports; district leaders used that visit as a model for systems they want to replicate at OHS.
Administrators said the hub will target three primary areas: systems of support (counseling and interventions), technical structures (space and personnel assignments) and ongoing communication with families and the community. The district identified the old Technology Building (the former district office) as the initial physical location for hub services; the building will house hub staff and provide space for online learning and flexible student workspaces while the district relocates technology functions elsewhere.
Josh Tovar will hold a dual role: assistant principal at Othello High School and director of student success at the district level, with much of his work based on the OHS campus. Perez and Schenk said hub classes and specific teacher assignments remain under development; a longer planning meeting was scheduled the following day to finalize schedules and hub instructional design. The presentation emphasized that hub supports will be available to any student who needs them, not only DOHS students, and that the district plans targeted outreach to families and community partners.
Administrators described program goals and language staff will use in the work, including CBE (Connect, Believe, Envision) and a “connect, believe, envision” framework, and noted the district intends to measure outcomes so the model can be replicated. Board members asked questions about space, student groupings and how hub services will be delivered; administrators said more detail will come in the next update.
No formal action or vote was taken on the plan during the meeting.
