Meeting participant says $10 million in USDA wildfire grants frozen, urges federal action

The participant said the grants affect projects administered through local partners and urged a federal role in resolving the hold-ups. "I met with Senator Padilla directly about, the $10,000,000 in frozen USDA, community wildfire defense grants, that is impacting our community right now," Speaker 2 said.
The update said county representatives also met with Senate banking staffers on both the majority and minority sides. Speaker 2 described accompanying colleagues from other counties and organizations, including Heidi Hall of Nevada County, Anne Cottrell of Napa County and a group referred to as Paragon, to make the case that the insurance and wildfire-resilience problems extend beyond state capacity and require federal involvement.
Speaker 2 also recounted work with a FEMA reform task force and meetings with White House staffers. "The report that they compiled telling our story was 1 of the best ones that they received," the participant said, thanking staff for preparing county materials for federal audiences. The speaker said about 18 elected officials from around the country participated in those discussions.
The participant flagged another potential problem: a set of foreclosures posted on a website the transcript names as the "Doge" website. "There are quite a number of leases that are listed on the Doge website that, foreclosures that will directly impact a lot of the projects, that are very important to this board," Speaker 2 said; the speaker said they expected more information back from a person named Luca and from Congressman Thompson's office.
Speaker 2 closed by listing upcoming events connected to wildfire preparedness and outreach: a Fireway Summit with the Kenaket Fire Safe Council, a town hall on water for fire suppression in Lower Lake, and a regional California State Association of Counties meeting in Chico where the participant said they would present on disaster preparedness. They also noted a scheduled Recreation Agency meeting and a Sunrise Rotary appearance.
No formal motions, votes or policy actions were recorded during the update portion of the meeting; the remarks were provided as a calendar/update item and the speaker said they would return with further information at a future meeting.
