Marshfield board approves solicitation of bids to renovate Stroman Park

Justin Cashperson, Parks and Recreation Director, told the Marshfield Board of Public Works on Jan. 20 that staff should be allowed to solicit bids for a renovation of Stroman Park.
Cashperson said the work would remove overgrown vegetation, refresh landscape beds, replace benches and tables, add topsoil and new grass and replant around a small park water feature. He said the park was dedicated in 1992 in memory of Lieutenant Marvin Stroman, who died in the line of duty in 1981, and that planting material has not been substantially updated in roughly 30 years.
Cashperson said staff had applied for four grants to fund the project and had sought about $15,000 in private donations but received no grant awards. Because of that, the project scope was reduced to about $35,000 so it could proceed with available local funding. He said the money for solicitation would come from the room tax fund and that a budget resolution related to the project is on the council agenda the next day.
Board members approved a motion to solicit bids and return a recommendation for contract award to the board for later consideration. The vote was taken by voice; the chair announced the motion carried.
The board’s approval authorizes staff to finalize plans with a designer and issue a request for bids; no construction contract was awarded Jan. 20.
