Polk County to begin interior buildout for Global Neighbors at 1900 Carpenter

Sarah, a Polk County General Services staff member, told supervisors the county has gutted the east side of the building and that the planned work is primarily interior buildout: assembling offices, creating conference and classroom space, and bringing bathrooms and sprinklers up to code. “The building has been, completely gutted, and general services is ready to get started on actual construction in that building,” Sarah said.
County staff said the project follows completion of work on the west side of the building for Polk County Life Services. BBS, the architect that helped plan use of the space, previously presented a buildout plan to the board and a budget was set aside within General Services to complete construction. County staff emphasized that the item discussed at the meeting was the construction piece only; staffing and operating questions were previously discussed during the budget process.
A supervisor asked whether the county would perform the work internally; a county official replied, “We’re gonna do it.” County staff also noted some work may be staged around other uses of county space and that earlier related work at River Place — coordinated with the election office — was part of sequencing before fully starting at 1900 Carpenter.
The update was presented as an informational briefing and no formal action or vote on the construction contract was recorded at the meeting. Supervisors were given the opportunity to ask questions and were told they would be notified when construction activity begins so no one is caught off guard by county crews working in the building.
