District administrators provided a first read of a new policy to implement New York State’s requirement that school districts include a student representative on the local board of education effective July 1, 2025.
The draft policy (presented as policy number 02/1945) includes background on the law, a description of permitted privileges and entitlements for the student representative, and several optional selection processes. Administrators said the district’s preliminary recommendation is to use option 4 — selection by the high school principal — and to require that the selected student have at least one year of student-government experience so the representative is familiar with student activities and concerns.
The draft also addresses term length and expectations, qualification requirements (including a one‑year enrollment requirement at the high school prior to selection) and conditions under which a student must remain in good standing to continue participation. Administrators said subsequent reads will remove portions of the model policy that do not apply to Bay Shore (for example, BOCES or large‑district provisions) and return a narrower draft for a final vote.
Board members discussed training opportunities for the student representative and noted an upcoming training being organized by the Nassau‑Suffolk school boards association for new student representatives. Administrators will return with a revised draft and reduced language tailored to district needs for the next meeting.
