Daly City library branch to close two weeks for construction; book drop and ballot box remain available

Library staff said a construction project will require a short-term closure of one branch to remove potentially hazardous materials and begin elevator installation.
Director Jayla told trustees at the Feb. 18 meeting that the branch will close to the public from Feb. 24 through March 7 while contractors remove materials from the 1970s-era building and begin work. “The library will be closed to the public, starting next week and, extending through the following week. So from February 24 through March 7,” Jayla said.
While closed, the library will keep its outdoor book drop and ballot drop box accessible; staff will not check in returns from the closed location during the shutdown and will not send out holds or receive deliveries there. Jayla said staff will continue working at other library locations and that holds left on the final day before closure will be brought to Westlake Library as a temporary accommodation.
After the two-week closure, Jayla said most of the building will reopen but a small area at the back of the upper floor—near where the elevator shaft is being installed—will remain cordoned off and covered in plastic. The installation will create a vertical opening between floors; temporary lighting will replace some decorative fixtures during construction. The director said the contractor expects the larger project to wrap up by next September, though minor punch-list items may extend that timeline.
The project will also require part of the adjacent park parking lot to be cordoned off for use by the construction company for the duration of the project, Jayla said. She encouraged patrons with due items to return them to other library locations to ensure quicker check-in and noted that returned items will be backdated when checked in after the closure.
Trustees asked about service continuity and the director confirmed notices are posted online, on voicemail and on Google Business listings, and that staff will post signage at the branch and notify neighboring libraries.
