Alpharetta design board approves Egg Harbor Cafe patio cover, asks for cleanup behind building

The City of Alpharetta Design Review Board on Feb. 21 approved an application to formalize an existing metal-frame canopy with a fabric cover over the side patio at Egg Harbor Cafe, near the corner of Georgia Lane and Northpointe Parkway.
The board’s action formalizes a canopy that has been in place since 2021 and was constructed without prior city sign or canopy approval, staff said. John Hetrick, representing Masterworks General Contracting and speaking for the restaurant, said the frame is metal and “the gray is the canopy” and that the canopy “has been constructed and used since 2021.”
Board members said the cover generally complements the building but raised a condition about outdoor storage. One board member said the area behind the building “looks a little cluttery” and suggested the landlord or tenant clean up ladders, tables and other materials that had been stored near the patio.
The board voted 7-0 to approve the patio cover “as presented,” with a written condition that the applicant or landlord remove stored debris behind the building. The motion was made and seconded on the record; the board chair called the roll with seven in favor and no opposition.
Why it matters: The approval regularizes work done without prior review and adds a small enforcement element — cleanup of stored items — intended to address long-standing outdoor storage and visibility concerns raised by board members.
The application file is DRB-250006. The board included no additional conditions on materials or changes to the installed frame; Hetrick told the board he would relay the cleanup request to his client.
