At its meeting, the Radford City Council filled a board vacancy, set a public hearing on a cable franchise extension and approved a grant-funded purchase for election equipment.
Council members nominated and unanimously voted to appoint Jenny Reif to the New River Community Action board to fill a recently vacated seat; Reif had indicated interest by email and community-action staff had confirmed the vacancy.
The council agreed to hold a public hearing on a requested extension to Shentel (referred to in the meeting as Shentel Cable / Chantel Cable) franchise agreement so the company may expand its fiber footprint in the city; the hearing was scheduled for the March 10 council meeting after a motion to set the date passed.
On an appropriation item, staff said the city received grant funds from the Virginia Department of Elections to purchase a ballot-on-demand (poll-print) ballot system. Council approved appropriation ordinance 18-02.2 to record and spend $8,615 into the registrar’s voting equipment budget to reflect the grant award. Council also dispensed with a second reading after four affirmative votes were recorded.
No controversial debate preceded these actions; the items were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote during the meeting.
