NIU trustees approve $2 million fee for football-only entry to Mountain West Conference

Northern Illinois University trustees on a special meeting approved a $2,000,000 membership fee for NIU to join the Mountain West Conference as a football-only member effective July 1, 2026. The board authorized payment in six annual installments of $333,333.35 and approved a plan to cover the fee and transition expenses through conference revenue distributions and guarantees rather than current institutional funds.
NIU President Lisa Freeman presented the item during the meeting and said the move is intended to "grow our strong football national brand and will put all of our athletic programs on a more sustainable track moving forward." Freeman said the football membership will be effective on "07/01/2026," and listed Mountain West football members that NIU will join, including the U.S. Air Force Academy, University of Hawaii, University of Nevada, Reno, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of New Mexico, San Jose State University, University of Texas El Paso and University of Wyoming.
Freeman also addressed budget concerns directly. "The university is committed to a balanced budget in fiscal year 26, and this will not hinder the progress, at all. In fact, it will probably help," she told trustees when asked whether the fee would affect the university's goal of a breakeven fiscal 2026 budget.
Sean Frasier, NIU athletic director and vice president for intercollegiate athletics, answered trustees' questions about competitive positioning, travel and the broader realignment landscape. Frasier described the decision as positioning NIU to participate in ongoing changes in college athletics and said the Mountain West offers opportunities for recruiting and exposure in new markets. He cautioned that conference alignments continue to evolve but said NIU "presents a lot of opportunity for the Mountain West and so does the Mountain West to NIU. So I think there's a win win right away."
Trustees asked about academic impacts of longer travel and weekend play; Freeman said NIU's academic culture for student-athletes informed the decision and that weekend air travel may be less disruptive than midweek bus travel. Trustees also asked whether the move posed financial risk to NIU's other sports. Frasier and Freeman both said they expect to continue sponsoring the same number of sports and to fully fund them; Frasier said administrators know the board "love my 17 pro 17 programs, and I do not want anything to happen to them" and that the university would "fully fund and fully support them."
The board approved the motion to adopt the membership fee and associated terms by recorded vote during the meeting's roll call. After the vote, Board Chair Montell Gales said, "Get ready, Mountain West. The NIU football Huskies are coming in 2026." The special meeting record shows no votes against or abstentions by trustees present.
The board discussed that conference distributions and guarantees—not current institutional funds—would cover the $2 million fee and other transition costs. The item itself specifies the fee will be paid in six annual installments of $333,333.35. NIU will remain a full member of its current conference for other sports during the transition period; football membership in the Mountain West is scheduled to begin July 1, 2026.
The board approved the amended agenda and then approved agenda item 6a, the membership fee for NIU to join the Mountain West Conference as a football-only member. The meeting adjourned after trustees set the next full board meeting for March 20, 2025, at 9 a.m.
