The Holyoke City Finance Committee approved a $25,000 transfer March 11 to install electric door operators on the main entrance double doors at the police station to meet accessibility needs.
Matthew Peterson, appearing for the police department, said the department obtained three quotes and the lowest written bid for furnishing and installing operators on the required door panels was $7,635 from New England Door Closer. Peterson said the electrical hookup by the on‑call electrician added another estimated cost, yielding a combined estimate around $16,800; the $25,000 request included a contingency for unforeseen conditions.
A member of the Commission for Disabilities described a recent visit in a wheelchair that found the entrance difficult to use and supported the upgrade. Peterson said the work will make the station entrance compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements by enabling one panel to open automatically.
The committee approved the transfer by voice vote. Staff noted capital stabilization retains a substantial balance after the transfer (committee printout cited approximately $227,000 remaining after this item). Committee members said they viewed the work as necessary to improve public access to a city facility.
