Navy liaison: Dahlgren not advanced for shore nuclear shortlist; base sees traffic and budget uncertainty

Adam Lynch, the community planning liaison officer for Naval Support Facility South Potomac (Dahlgren), briefed the Planning Commission on recent base developments, traffic impacts and federal budget uncertainty. Lynch said Dahlgren was among sites considered for shore nuclear power generation but “we were informed finally officially that we did not make the first round of cuts.” He added the base still expects continued emphasis on energy resilience and production.
Lynch said the base is experiencing larger than normal volumes of vehicles entering the gates as personnel return to workplace operations, producing longer lines and a strain on gate staff. He thanked county Sheriff Giles for agreeing to place an electronic sign on Route 301 to warn drivers of backups approaching Dahlgren Road. Lynch also cautioned commissioners the current federal discussion of defense budget cuts has disparate potential effects on civilian employees and that higher‑level decisions remain pending. “At this point, we are still trying to get to work and and do our jobs to press forward with our mission until we get further clarification from higher headquarters,” Lynch said.
Lynch encouraged continued coordination with county staff on emergency planning and thanked supervisors who attended the community relations board meeting. He concluded by saying he will continue to attend monthly meetings unless directed otherwise by higher headquarters.
