George Washington Regional Commission to form rural technical advisory committee for Caroline and King George; board backs resolution of support

The King George County Board of Supervisors voted to provide a resolution of support for a proposed rural technical advisory committee (TAC) under the George Washington Regional Commission (GWRC) that would serve Caroline and King George counties.
Carrie Eaves, GWRC planner, said the rural TAC would meet quarterly and focus on rural transportation priorities, SmartScale project development, VDOT coordination and the rural work program tasks already funded through GWRC. She told supervisors the committee is meant to give the two counties regular, locally focused representation rather than relying on a larger regional TAC dominated by urban jurisdictions.
"We believe that this standing committee would be a more efficient way to carry out those tasks," Eaves said, describing regional analysis, project-development support and coordination with VDOT as committee responsibilities.
The GWRC board will vote on creating the committee at its April meeting; if approved, GWRC will ask each county to appoint two staff representatives and a local elected or staff member to serve. Eaves said the rural committee’s work would be funded through the existing rural work program (no additional county contribution was requested).
Supervisors said the proposal addresses a gap in rural representation at existing regional TAC meetings and could improve competitiveness for SmartScale funds by helping the counties prepare pre‑scoping and application materials earlier in the SmartScale cycle.
Action: The board approved a resolution of support for GWRC to form a rural technical advisory committee and will later appoint two county staff members to serve if GWRC finalizes the committee in April. Directors requested that GWRC forward meeting minutes and project status updates to the board so supervisors can track progress on regional project development.
