Commissioners approve one-night use of county gym for Belmont Wrestling throwback event with security conditions

Adams County commissioners approved use of the county gymnasium by Belmont wrestling for a themed “throwback” meet on Jan. 16, agreeing to the request provided security and access arrangements are in place.
Tim Myers, identified in the meeting as head coach for the Belmont wrestling team, described a retro-themed event and said the team would manage staffing and cleanup. Chris Carl, representing Decatur parks/organizers, said he would coordinate building access and work with county facilities staff.
Commissioners and building superintendent Rick discussed security and access limitations caused by added secured doors and the courthouse’s office-area configuration. The county asked organizers to station volunteers at stairwells and to limit public access to office areas; the parties agreed on using upstairs tumbling room, stage area or the rock-climbing room as changing areas and to provide volunteers at stairway landings. The county also advised organizers to coordinate custodial coverage for restrooms and to cancel existing gym programs that conflict with the date.
Commissioners said the county would accommodate the event if organizers and county staff could ensure building security during the evening; staff said they would finalize details with the athletic director and with the event organizers before the scheduled date.
