Students recognized for statewide architecture contest; schools announce performances, kindergarten outreach and community programs

The Wethersfield Board of Education recognized two Wethersfield High School students who competed in a statewide youth design contest organized by the Home Builders and Remodelers Association. Teacher Sue Coco brought students Dylan Cyr and Sam Charbonneau to the March 11 meeting to show their projects and explain the experience.
Sam Charbonneau won second place in the statewide competition and received a $600 award, the teacher said. Both students described networking opportunities at the contest; Dylan said the experience led to contacts and a potential internship, while Sam said the contest reinforced her decision to pursue architecture and an accelerated master's program.
Board members praised the students' work and the teacher's classroom approach that links project-based learning to career exposure.
Committee reports and community updates at the meeting included:
- Keane enrichment programs announced an elementary-school musical (Shrek) at Highcrest with performances on March 14–15 and ticketing information to be shared with the district.
- The Wethersfield Early Childhood Collaborative (WEC) reminded families to register incoming kindergarten students before May 1 and highlighted a free four-day summer "Transition to Kindergarten" program and several kindergarten readiness playdates in August.
- Webb School will host a Screenagers screening for parents on March 19, and climate and inclusion work continues across elementary schools as part of school-improvement plans.
- The Transition Academy reported sales from its student-run business "Cards for All," with proceeds funding student programming; board members encouraged community purchases and noted the academy's plans to expand retail opportunities.
Board members and the student representative also updated the board about theater productions, sports achievements and other extracurricular activities across the district.
The recognitions and committee reports were informational; no formal board actions were taken on these items during the meeting.
