Local VFW and Vietnam Veterans chapter plan March 30 welcome-home parade; council offers support

Representatives of VFW Post 5118 and a Vietnam Veterans chapter asked the Talbot County Council Tuesday for community support for a March 30 welcome‑home parade honoring Vietnam-era veterans.
Commander Kenley Tims and Wayne Hall, president of the Vietnam Veterans chapter, said the event will begin with a short ceremony at 1 p.m. at the courthouse memorial followed by a roughly half‑mile parade from Dover Street to the VFW. The organizers said they plan to lay a wreath, give short remarks, honor family members and provide commemorative 50-year pinning ceremonies at the VFW at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
“We're inviting the community out. We're hoping that we have thousands of people on the street,” Tims said, asking council members and residents to contact Vietnam-era veterans and family members and participate in the event. The organizers said gold-star parents will ride in convertibles and the parade will particularly honor Vietnam-era veterans who did not receive public recognition on their return home.
Council members thanked the veterans and expressed support; several said they planned to attend the event.
