The Talbot County Council proclaimed March 2025 Endometriosis Awareness Month at its meeting Tuesday and heard from a local advocate who described long delays to diagnosis and the disease’s impacts.
“Endometriosis is a disease affecting at least one in 10 women of reproductive age,” the council read in a proclamation that outlined worldwide prevalence, typical diagnostic delay, and calls for more research into less invasive tests and better treatments.
Shannon Hanawald, an ambassador for the Endometriosis Association and founder of Endo Warriors of the Eastern Shore, told the council she was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis and has had numerous surgeries and fertility treatments. She described the years before diagnosis as a period when doctors dismissed her pain and recounted the condition’s physical and mental toll.
“One of the things I want to say is thank you,” Hanawald told the council. She urged continued awareness and support for women and families affected by the disease.
Council members thanked Hanawald for her advocacy and presented her with a copy of the proclamation.
