Waste Management Central Valley informed the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors during public comment that the company will begin delivering new recycling and organics carts next week to residents in parts of the county as part of the county’s SB 1383 compliance work.
Vanessa Barberis, speaking for Waste Management Central Valley, said a third‑party contractor will perform a two‑week rollout of the new containers to properties in service areas A, B and E. "The process is gonna take about two weeks, with service for these new containers beginning on March 31," Barberis said. At that point, she said, "all current WM customers within the county will have weekly recycling, trash, and organics collection."
Barberis said residents in the affected areas have received mailers and that Waste Management will share materials with supervisors to respond to constituent questions. She also invited the board and residents to the company’s annual e‑waste and household hazardous waste recycling event on April 5 at the county’s Turner Road transfer station from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where residents can drop off used paint, batteries and electronics.
Why it matters
SB 1383 (state law) requires jurisdictions to expand organics diversion and organics collection. The hauler’s rollout means weekly organics service will be available to customers in the identified service zones beginning March 31, changing collection patterns and offering disposal options for food and yard waste.
What Waste Management told the board
Vanessa Barberis, representing WM Central Valley Waste, summarized the timeline: a third‑party contractor will begin delivering carts next week, the delivery effort will take about two weeks, and collection under the new service schedule will start March 31. Barberis added that WM and the county co‑host an e‑waste/hazardous waste event on April 5 at the Turner Road transfer station (9 a.m.–1 p.m.).
Ending note
Residents in service areas A, B and E should have received mailed notices from Waste Management. Supervisors asked WM staff to provide the board copies of the mailed notices so supervisors can respond to constituent questions.
