District reports wellness screener benchmark, ELA pilot and CTE review; students to help with principal recruitment

At the Granite Falls School Board meeting, teaching-and-learning staff reported the district is completing its second benchmark of a student wellness screener, running a 6–12 ELA pilot and hosting an on-site Career and Technical Education (CTE) review by WASA.
Emily, a district teaching-and-learning staff member, said the wellness screener from the Center for Educational Effectiveness is in its second benchmark and that completion should be smoother this cycle. "We are just in the middle of our second benchmark of student wellness screener...and it's gonna be a little smoother this time," Emily said.
Emily also described a 6–12 ELA pilot of HMH Into Lit; secondary teachers are piloting the materials and staff will assess the pilot against a rubric with a recommendation expected in May. The district said it has not had a comprehensive secondary English curriculum in several decades and framed the pilot as addressing that gap.
Staff reported an active CTE WASA review is underway; district staff leading the work were named as Candace Ward and Josh Benson. Emily and other staff said WASA staff will be on-site to interview staff and review documents.
The district also described student-voice initiatives: Tiger Cabinet members (students in grades 3 through 12) will participate in icebreakers, ask questions of cabinet members and produce videos to inform principal recruitment for Monte Cristo Elementary and Granite Falls High School. The district also said Representative Lowe, Representative Esselick and Senator Wagner will visit students on May 29.
Ending: Staff invited board members to upcoming events and noted continued work on mentor release time, software/system reviews and principal recruitment; no board action was taken on these items at the meeting.
