Business advisory council advises CTE planning; board hears annual report

David Cross presented the Randolph County School System board with the annual report of the Business Advisory Council for Career and Technical Education, describing the council’s membership, role and recent activities.
Cross said the council operates under North Carolina General Statute 115C-170, requires at least biannual meetings and provides industry guidance on a two‑year CTE strategic plan. The advisory group includes community college leadership, industry leaders, CTE teachers and coordinators; Cross said membership is about 17 people and that the board recently appointed Kevin Franklin, president of the Economic Development Commission, as council chair.
"This group is a critical group to how we do CTEs," Cross said, adding that the council provides feedback on program alignment with local workforce needs. The council toured Providence Grove High School’s CTE programs in December and provided feedback to leaders on program alignment and pathways to local jobs.
Board members asked whether the Randolph Chamber of Commerce has a seat on the council. Cross said the chamber typically does but the seat was vacant following recent leadership turnover and that the district is working to fill three new industry seats.
Cross said the district will host a planning meeting in the spring with council leadership and will invite board members to participate; he offered to circulate meeting dates and agendas to the board. No formal board action was taken on the report.
