The Azusa Unified School District Board of Education on March 11 recognized Parents of the Year from each school and named Donovan Martinez of Magnolia Elementary as the district Parent of the Year for 2024–25.
Principals from multiple schools introduced their honorees and described volunteer and leadership activities that earned the recognition. Marcela Fonseca, principal of Magnolia Elementary, introduced Donovan Martinez and described his work on school councils and parent engagement; Martinez accepted the district honor and urged other parents — particularly fathers and working parents — to "show up," saying "showing up is important" as a way to support children and the school community.
Other honorees included parents from Valleydale/Valley Hill Elementary (principal Horacio Trejo), Sierra High School (principal Teresa Peterson), Dalton Elementary (principal Jessica Estrada), Hodge Elementary (principal Jeanette Flores), Charles H. Lee Elementary (principal Charles H. Lee Elementary campus principal), Longfellow, Murray, Paramount, Gladstone Middle School, Azusa High School and others. Assistant Superintendent Norma Camacho and multiple principals highlighted the parents’ volunteer roles in PTA, School Site Councils, fundraising, family nights, and classroom support.
Board members and student board representatives offered congratulations. Board clerk Yolanda Rodriguez Pena and other board members thanked parents for their time and said parent voice helps shape district decisions. The board paused for a group photo and recessed briefly before continuing business.
Why it matters: The presentations underscored the district’s emphasis on family engagement as a contributor to student success and community cohesion. The district said Parent of the Year honorees exemplify volunteerism across PTA, advisory councils, and classroom support.
