Orange Park council approves $199,876 purchase and installation of cellular water meters

The Town of Orange Park Council voted unanimously Jan. 20 to approve purchase and installation of Badger eSeries G2 ultrasonic water meters with Orion cellular endpoints, a package priced at $199,876.
Town staff said the purchase will add 467 meters and, combined with an earlier buy of 367 units, will bring the town to about 864 upgraded meters. Crocey told the council the town has roughly 3,147 meters on the system, so the approved purchase would put nearly one-third of the town’s meters on the cellular-read platform. Staff said meters in the ground tend to slow over time and that new meters read more accurately.
Crocey and the town manager described system features: the Orion cellular endpoints collect 15-minute interval data and transmit every four hours; staff can set alarms for leak detection (for example, 12 hours of continuous flow). The town said customers could be given access to view their own meter data as a service. Warranty coverage for the meters was reported as 10 years.
Council discussion confirmed the purchase was budgeted, that earlier pilot installs occurred, and that units would ship within about two weeks if the town issues a purchase order; Crocey estimated the town could complete the meter transition over about two years. The council approved the motion 5-0. The motion text on the record referred to Utility Solutions and Automation LLC as the vendor.
