City reports on recent events, ADA marina lift installation and staff updates

City officials reviewed several recent community events and staff updates during the meeting.

Parks and events staff reported that Rutheruan Ruby was held last Saturday and described it as successful despite chilly weather. Officials also thanked multiple departments — public works, police and waterfront operations — for support. A parks official said the waterfront operations team led by Dan Charles performed well.

City staff confirmed that a donation accepted earlier from a leadership class for an ADA lift at the marina was procured and installed a few days before the meeting and is now available for use. A city official said the council previously accepted the donation on behalf of the city.

Council members thanked organizers of Harbor Day and the African American Heritage Festival and noted that those events brought community participation. A council member said the African American Heritage Festival “was very nice…great food, great music,” and that it had the most vendors the event has had.

The council also introduced Chris Allison as the new recreation supervisor and welcomed youth council participants who shadowed city departments. One student, identified as Alyssa, thanked the city for restoring the mayor’s youth council program and said it “is a really amazing opportunity” to see how local government operates.

Separately, the mayor praised decorative bollards installed at the Tavares Library entrance as both attractive and a safety feature and asked staff to confirm who selected the fixtures.
