On state funding, the chancellor said Governor Shapiro included suggested funding for Pitt and other state-related universities in his recent budget address and that Pitt will testify before the Pennsylvania House Appropriations Committee on Feb. 28. The chancellor also noted that the performance-based funding council will hold a hearing on Pitt's campus on Feb. 19; the council held hearings at Penn State (Jan. 21) and Temple (Jan. 29). He identified university representatives serving on related bodies, saying Kevin Washoe serves on the State Board for Higher Education and Dwayne Pinkney serves on the performance-based funding council.
On federal matters, Gable said an internal team is tracking administrative policy directives and executive orders from the new administration and reviewing agency guidance to assess campus impacts. He emphasized that the review is ongoing and that the university will provide updates as analyses are completed.
Gable reported several leadership appointments and transitions. Jane Magooey was named chief audit executive effective Jan. 13, succeeding John Elliott who retired after nearly 30 years. Jerry Dickinson was named dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, effective Jan. 15, after a national search. David Beck was named interim dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) following Tommy Delitto's move to associate provost for digital education; a national search for a permanent SHRS dean will proceed.
The chancellor announced philanthropic and partnership developments, including a $1,500,000 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Anna Gray fellowship awarded to postdoctoral researcher Tiffany Taylor and a Vihar gift establishing a center to reduce global health disparities funded by Vishnu Bridal and his sister Harsha Vardhanie. He also cited a partnership with NVIDIA to establish a joint center for AI and intelligence systems focused on computational opportunities in the health sciences.
Gable closed by recognizing faculty, students and alumni honors and athletic awards, citing several recent national recognitions.
The report concluded and the board moved to the next agenda item.
