The Community Improvement Board unanimously appointed Vernon Compton as its new chair at a January 2025 meeting, following the December resignation of former chair Cassandra Sharp.
The appointment came after the board’s chair slot was left vacant when Cassandra Sharp resigned for personal reasons in December. The board’s membership voted to confirm Compton’s acceptance; members indicated no objections during the roll call and the motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
“I think important to these meetings is the ability to have very open discussion and public input,” Vernon Compton said after the vote, adding that he appreciated staff work preparing packet materials for the board.
The appointment was procedural: the board’s acting officer presented Compton as the nominee, a motion and second were recorded, and members voiced their approval. The CIB’s role is advisory to the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency on capital projects, so the chair will lead the board’s work on priorities such as sidewalks, lighting and downtown redevelopment projects.
Compton said he expects to continue open discussion and public input as the board develops recommendations for the CRA and city council. The board did not take any separate substantive policy action as part of the appointment vote.
