Shelley Shearer, president of the PASSHE Foundation, updated the Board of Governors on foundation activities, fundraising and recent grants supporting student scholarships, emergency aid and employer partnerships.
Shearer said the foundation distributed about $2,000,000 a year in scholarships and emergency grants and generated approximately $1,000,000 for strategic initiatives across universities and the chancellor's office. She noted a Strata Educational Foundation grant and a commitment from Highmark Health as an initial partner for a work-based learning project; Shearer also said the foundation secured an ECMC Foundation grant to help four universities with FAFSA outreach after last year's federal application disruptions.
The nut graf: the foundation is positioning itself as an "advancement engine" to raise philanthropic dollars and convene employer partners to support student pathways and stackable credentials in collaboration with campuses and state agencies.
Shearer also announced a new grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to support an industry partnership with the Pennsylvania Bankers Association and said the foundation will soon add a fourth staff member to manage a grant-supported project on behalf of the chancellor's office.
Ending: Shearer invited board members to make introductions to potential funders and said the foundation will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026.
