Commission backs state-level public-records exemption for municipal clerks' personal data

The Town Commission unanimously approved a resolution Feb. 19 asking the Florida League of Cities to pursue state legislation that would exempt certain personal identifying information for municipal clerks (and deputy clerks performing election duties) from public-records disclosure. The resolution asks the League to seek statutory language to protect addresses, telephone numbers and other personally identifying details used in connection with election administration.
Commissioners and the town attorney discussed the narrow scope of the request — the resolution targets personal data (home addresses, phone numbers, family contact information and similar PII) for staff who serve as election officials or perform sensitive investigative duties — and does not seek to shield records that relate to official decision-making or the town’s public business. The commission asked the town attorney to add the specific statutory citation to the final resolution before sending it to the Florida League of Cities.
Supporters said the change is intended to reduce safety and privacy risks to municipal clerks and deputies who perform election functions and to align clerks with other public-safety and investigative positions that already receive exemptions. The resolution passed 5-0.
