City announces MPCA wastewater grants and RP3 utility recognition

City staff reported receiving two MPCA wastewater resiliency grants totaling roughly $350,000 in project value and announced the electric utility’s RP3 platinum status from the American Public Power Association.
Pete, a city staff member, told the council that city staff applied for and received two wastewater resiliency grants sponsored by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) related to facilities impacted by flood water.
Pete described the first grant as an application for Kasota Lift Station SCADA and backup generation. The city applied for $175,000 and received 90% of that award, or roughly $157,900, Pete said. The Kasota lift station is owned and maintained by St. Peter to serve the Kasota area; staff said the facility lacks a comprehensive SCADA system and that added monitoring and backup generation would improve response and resilience.
The second grant covered sanitary sewer lining along Trunk Highway 169 on the west side; staff applied for $213,000 and said they received $192,280. Both grants require a 10% local match; staff said the city’s planned lining funds will cover the match and in-kind services. Pete said the awards together save the city about $350,000 it would otherwise have had to cover.
Pete also reported that the city’s electric utility achieved RP3 (Reliable Public Power Provider) recognition from the American Public Power Association and that the utility’s current classification is platinum, placing St. Peter between platinum and gold in the RP3 tiers. Pete credited utility staff led by Jason Lee for reliability improvements and preventive maintenance work that reduced outages.
