Public Works staff briefed the committee on bids to repair Centaur Bridge, north of Bald Horse Creek Road, after an inspection identified deficiencies that require repair.
Staff said the department received three bids; RB Wagner (also referred to as Arvey Wagner in material provided to the committee) submitted the low bid at $121,684.80. The city had budgeted $150,000 for the work and staff recommended a contract not to exceed $140,000, including contingency funds, to complete the project. Staff estimated the repairs would extend the serviceable life of the structure by about eight to ten years; building a new bridge would cost substantially more, on the order of a million dollars or more.
Committee members discussed bridge age and condition (the structure dates to 1967 and had work done in 2011). Members asked whether traffic volumes justified replacement versus rehabilitation; staff said the bridge provides useful redundancy but traffic volumes on Centaur/approach roads are not high and rehabilitation was the recommended near-term approach.
The committee approved a motion to proceed with the contract award to the low bidder with the total contract amount not to exceed $140,000, and directed staff to proceed with the repairs.
