Vestavia Hills High School closed to full attendance after campus‑wide plumbing failure; district running new line
Summary
A significant underground plumbing obstruction at the high school's senior‑patio area forced the district to excavate and run a new 6‑inch line (reported 250–300 feet) with contractors; families were to receive an update at 6 p.m.

The board received an update on a major plumbing failure at Vestavia Hills High School that disrupted campus operations and required emergency excavation.
Superintendent Dr. Freeman said the failure occurred under the senior patio area and that the district decided to install a new line independent of the existing pipe. He said crews and three contractors were on site and that the new run required approximately 250 to 300 feet of 6‑inch pipe, multiple concrete penetrations and a six‑foot drop in places. Dr. Freeman said the exact cause is not confirmed and could be either long‑term accumulation or a collapsed terracotta pipe installed in the 1970s; staff said there were no foundation concerns reported.
“We obviously, we can't have 1,600 kids, and 200 staff members on the site,” Dr. Freeman said, explaining the decision to limit or alter operations while repairs continue. He said parents would receive an update about next steps at about 6 p.m. and that work would continue into the next day.
Why it matters: The superintendent told the board the failure affected the entire main campus because restrooms were unavailable. Staff called the repair a tedious excavation through concrete and conduits.
Board members and staff thanked campus personnel, contractors and families for flexibility. The superintendent emphasized the district’s intent to return students to campus as quickly as safety and facilities permit.
