Sandusky commission reviews $648,493 economic development fund balance; staff reports several project updates

Director Gilson told the Sandusky Boards & Commissions that the economic development assistance program began February with a balance of $718,493 and, after deducting a $70,000 portion of the annual grant to the Greater Sandusky Partnership funded by Issue 8 economic development funds, had an unencumbered balance of $648,493 available for program support.
Gilson reviewed active and recent projects. She said Pipe Creek Wharf, previously closed for the winter, is scheduled to reopen April 17. Small City Tap House has completed an awning installation and selected a new sign that will undergo city review before installation this summer. BAS Broadcasting’s renovation and relocation are still in process and scheduled to finish this summer. Sandusky Packaging’s renovation is complete, and staff is awaiting final invoices and proof of payment before dispersing funds.
On Saucy Brew Works, Gilson said the grant in question was issued under older guidelines that may not have required job-creation commitments. She said she did not have confirmation that Saucy Brew Works will reopen and had heard informally that it might not reopen for the season; she described that information as not final.
Commission members asked procedural questions about funds and timing. When asked whether the $648,493 figure was “unencumbered,” Gilson replied, “unencumbered yes That's funds available for program, support as of today.” A motion to accept the financial report and project updates carried by voice vote; commissioners indicated assent by saying “aye.”
The commission also approved routine minutes from its December 16, 2024 meeting at the start of the session.
