Pittsburgh officials cite aging fleet, staffing limits and budget constraints in snow response

Council President Lavelle opened a February 2025 Pittsburgh City Council cablecast post‑agenda on snow removal saying the goal was "to get answers and results for the residents." City public‑works leaders and the controller described an aging fleet, persistent maintenance gaps and limited funding that they said constrained winter operations.

The director of public works, Chris Hornstein, said the city has "a snow fleet that has a hundred and 3 vehicles. As of today, 37 of those vehicles are unavailable to us." Bill Crane, deputy director of public works, told the council the city can store about "20,000 tons of salt citywide if we're at full capacity," and that the city uses a magnesium‑treated salt with a working temperature of about minus 17 to minus 20 degrees.
