Tuscaloosa City Schools on Feb. 18 recognized the Eastwood Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball team as 2025 city-county champions, highlighting the team's 19-2 season record and coaches' emphasis on grades, behavior and leadership off the court.
"We went 19 and 2," the team's coaches told the board, and Coach Gideon, who coaches the team, said the championship reflected contributions from administrators, parents, booster clubs and school staff.
Player Jonathan Williams described the title game and overtime finish: "We worked real hard to get there ... it came up to a close game. They hit a buzzer beater ... we went in OT. I think we won by, like, 6." Coaching staff also told the board about a player who used a missed free-throw earlier in the season to practice and later made critical free throws in the overtime championship game.
Board members praised the coaches' mentoring role. Speakers emphasized that the program stresses academic eligibility and character development as much as on-court skill, and administrators thanked volunteers, custodial staff and other support personnel who assist the athletic program.
The board presented the team and coaches with recognition certificates and took group photos during the meeting.
