Juneau — The Senate Education Committee adopted a committee substitute for Senate Bill 6 on Wednesday and reported the bill from committee with individual recommendations and an attached fiscal note.
Mike Mason, staff to the committee, explained that the substitute (work order 34‑LS‑0071\N) deletes an “approved by department” line so curricula created under the bill would not require department approval. Mason said the change was intended to eliminate a fiscal impact and leave curriculum decisions to local districts.
Sponsor Senator Ray Jackson said the change reduced the bill’s fiscal exposure and that the substitute carries a zero fiscal note. President Stevens moved to adopt the substitute as the committee’s working document and later moved to report SB 6 from the committee; both motions were adopted without objection.
Senator Jackson said he is hopeful the bill will move to finance and ultimately reach the Senate floor with the committee’s recommendations. Committee members did not request additional amendments during Wednesday’s floor of business.
The committee’s action will forward SB 6 to the next procedural step with the adopted substitute and the attached fiscal analysis.
