Hoover board approves 2025–26 science and automotive textbook adoptions

The Hoover City Schools Board of Education on March 11 approved textbook recommendations for the 2025–26 school year, adopting new science and automotive materials recommended by district review committees.

District Superintendent Dr. Maddox presented the recommendations and introduced Whitney Cooks, the district’s secondary curriculum coordinator, who described the review process. "In December of 2023, the Alabama State Department of Education Board of Education approved a new science course of study," Cooks said, and the district then formed a local textbook committee to review state-approved samples and reach a consensus. The district voting committee "unanimously approved the recommendations to the board," she said.

The board motioned and approved the science and automotive adoptions as presented. Board members discussed timing for future adoptions; Cooks told the board that social studies adoptions are expected next year and that textbook cycles generally occur on roughly a six-year cadence, though timing can vary. She said most K–8 materials will include both digital licenses and consumable workbooks, with high-school teachers typically requesting classroom sets paired with student digital access.

The presentation noted that the district negotiates vendor updates and typically purchases additional digital licenses as needed between adoptions. The board did not specify implementation dates beyond approving the purchases for the 2025–26 school year.

The approval came as part of the meeting’s consent and action items; the motion carried without individual roll-call votes recorded in the transcript.

Board members did not request amendments to the recommendation during discussion. The district will proceed with vendor negotiations and license procurement consistent with the committee’s recommendations.
