Summary
Superintendent Dr. Campbell described a proposed coordinator position to support student programs, outlined a proposed district-recreation collaboration to manage youth travel teams, and summarized the wellness policy review committee's work and schedule.
Superintendent Dr. Campbell told the Orange City School District Board on Feb. 10 that the administration is preparing a coordinator position ("coordinator 2") intended to support student services and to follow up on parent-group recommendations.
Dr. Campbell said part of the position's responsibilities would include continuity of support efforts and recruitment work discussed with a parent group. "Part of the person job description will also include efforts that were outlined with our discussion with the parent group, hoping with, recruitment," Dr. Campbell said.
Travel sports: Dr. Campbell and board members discussed a proposed collaboration between the district and the recreation department to manage travel teams for younger children. Board members asked whether the model would reduce family costs, enable centralized oversight of uniforms and insurance coverage, and permit hiring or contracting coaches or specialists. One board member framed the proposal as a way to market opportunities and reduce participation costs for families; another urged caution about not drawing players away from local recreation programs.
Dr. Campbell and staff said travel teams would be organized to avoid duplicating or replacing existing recreational programs, and that insurance coverage would be provided by the district for district-run programs. The superintendent characterized the initiative as a trial for younger age groups, not a prohibition on parent-run travel programs for older youth.
Wellness policy: the board was updated on the wellness policy review committee, which met in early February with about 20 participants. The committee is reviewing nutrition education, physical education and activity components and will collect survey feedback before addressing food-selection reviews in May. The committee plans additional meetings in March and April to continue the review and will report recommendations to the board.
Other items: staff noted an overnight trip related to Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and that the district is handling contract paperwork; dates were adjusted and will be reflected in the public agenda.
Ending: Board members encouraged continued updates on the coordinator position, the travel-sports pilot, wellness review results and the students' experiences at the FBLA event.
