Resident raises concerns about steep water and sewer increases and sidewalk grate maintenance

Nora Norman of 702 Hawk Street spoke during the public comment portion of the March 11 meeting to complain about rising water and sewer bills and to raise a sidewalk maintenance concern.
Norman said the city's recent water and sewer increases have made living in Oshkosh harder for some residents. "Last year, we just increased them 18%. It's starting to get a little hard to live in the city of Oshkosh with all of the increases of the property taxes, the increase, the large increase in the water," Norman said, adding that she had seen her bill go "from paying $35 a month to over $80 a month for the same usage in a year and a half." Norman asked the council to consider the impact of further rate increases.
She also complained about metal grates installed at curb corners during sidewalk repairs, saying they are hard to shovel or snow-blow and that residents must clean them by hand. "You can't shovel them, you can't plow them, you can't snow blow them," she said.
Deputy Mayor Bulow and staff invited Norman to follow up with the water and sewer department and indicated that opportunities exist to discuss specific complaints with staff after the meeting. The council did not take immediate action in response to the public comment; staff follow-up would be the normal next step for individual account or maintenance complaints.
