West High FBLA students invite community to fundraiser; resident thanks district for immigrant-student protections

Wad Mohammed, a sophomore at West High School, and Julie Langlois addressed the Manchester School Committee on Feb. 10 to invite community members to two FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) fundraising events. Mohammed said the club is raising funds to attend a state leadership conference at the DoubleTree in Bedford and invited attendance at a Chipotle fundraiser Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. in Bedford. He also invited the board and public to a sponsored basketball game on Feb. 18 that will raise awareness and funds for cancer-related charities; FBLA will sell shirts and donate a portion of proceeds to a New Hampshire cancer organization and will use remaining proceeds for blankets and essentials for treatment centers.
In a separate comment, Manchester resident Greg Erskine thanked the district for a Jan. 24 email from the superintendent affirming that the right to an education is a core value regardless of a student’s immigration status. Erskine said the district statement provided stability for students and families and that he had emailed the superintendent to express appreciation.
Why it matters: Student-led fundraisers are common local fundraising mechanisms for extracurricular travel and competitions. The superintendent’s public reaffirmation of access to education was highlighted by a resident as an important reassurance for families.
