Elementary curriculum update: play‑based kindergarten, Amplify ELA, Ready Math, and new specialist scope-and-sequence work

District curriculum staff presented an elementary curriculum update to the Teaching and Learning Committee on Feb. 11, summarizing core-program usage and professional development activity across grades K–5.
Highlights included the district’s continued use of play-based kindergarten as the foundation for social, cognitive and self-regulation skill development; Amplify “skills” and “knowledge” strands for ELA (phonics/decoding and comprehension/background knowledge); and Ready Math Classroom for math reasoning, problem solving and fact fluency. The district also named Think SRSD as a scaffolded approach to writing instruction and Mystery Science as its inquiry-based elementary science resource.
Specialist teachers (art, music, STEM/health, library media, and physical education) have been unpacking standards and building shared scope-and-sequence documents; library media specialists framed work around reading engagement, information literacy and media literacy. Curriculum staff said they will continue to identify essential standards, create proficiency scales and build common assessments as part of a broader move toward standards-aligned instruction. A cross-grade curriculum working session scheduled quarterly will now include middle-school colleagues to ease transitions.
Committee members welcomed the update and asked that the work continue to be shared; staff noted that the first follow-up session drew strong demand and will continue quarterly.
Ending: District staff will continue curriculum alignment work, develop proficiency scales and common assessments, and expand collaborative PD across elementary and middle grades to strengthen transitions and instructional coherence.
