Committee approves Manchester Creates student survey for classrooms of trained teachers

The Manchester School District Teaching and Learning Committee on Feb. 11 approved Manchester Creates’ request to administer a short student survey in classrooms taught by seven teachers who participated in a Build Back Better-funded professional development (PD) program on regenerative medicine and biofabrication.
Nicole Doherty and Eleanor Joffrey presented the request. Manchester Creates ran a two-week teacher PD and a middle/high-school student tech camp last summer; the current request seeks permission to survey only students in classes where the participating teachers implemented projects tied to the PD. The goal is program evaluation and improvement; Manchester Creates said the research will inform program sustainment and help demonstrate outcomes to sponsors.
Presenters said the survey will be brief (10–15 minutes), will not collect personally identifiable information, and will be administered electronically with district-approved survey software (paper copies available for accessibility needs). Unique survey links will identify only the school, teacher, class and grade, and results will be aggregated for reporting. Parents/guardians will receive an opt-in/opt-out notice 10 days prior to administration, with a reminder 5–7 days later. Manchester Creates said it will share aggregated results with the district and sponsors and that public reports will not identify individual students or teachers.
Committee members voiced support for the project’s focus on science identity and engagement; one committee member said the survey items come from validated measures, including an NSF-backed science engagement instrument. A motion to approve administration of the survey carried by voice vote.
