Board recognizes student leaders, student‑athletes and staff; student rep previews trips and contests

The East Hartford Board of Education heard a student report and recognized student athletes and staff during its education meeting.
Student representative Savannah told the board the student advisory board attended the Connecticut Association of Student Councils convention at Woodland High School and that the China Club hosted a Chinese games afternoon on March 11 to help fund a planned 2026 trip. She said SAT prep sessions are under way with more than 25 students attending and that the biomedical club will send 50 students to a competition at the University of Connecticut on March 22.
Board members then acknowledged several student-athlete accomplishments. Coach Martin Brown of East Hartford High School introduced Davion Johnson, a hurdler the coach said was a freshman national finalist and is now ranked No. 1 in Class LL and No. 1 in Connecticut, and listed Brianna Rose, whom he described as a state champion and ranked nationally. "It's a testament to her hard work and her dedication," Coach Brown said of Rose.
The board also presented a staff spotlight. Stacy Porch, the grade 11 assistant principal at East Hartford High School, described her background teaching English and her approach to visibility and relationships with students: "I make sure I'm out there. I'm visible. They know who I am," she said. The board also recognized Javier, administrative assistant at Mayberry Elementary School, for attendance, scheduling and family communications.
Superintendent Thomas Anderson praised the balance student-athletes maintain between sports and academics and thanked staff for their daily work in schools. There were no votes attached to the recognitions; they were presented as part of regular district business.
