Pine Mountain Elementary outlines “grow together” plan to welcome students from 5 Points

Miss Bukowski, Pine Mountain Elementary principal, told the Columbia County School Board that Pine Mountain will use banners, student-planted seeds and family events to welcome students transferring from 5 Points after recent zoning changes.
“We were getting anywhere between 60 to 100 students from 5 Points, and I know that number is very fluid,” Miss Bukowski said. “We wanna welcome them to the family. We look forward to growing with them.” She said the school will display welcome banners at its open house on April 2, give new families postcards, offer a brief faculty introduction, and invite families to a Color Run in April and a back-to-school bash in August.
The presentation emphasized family engagement and staff team-building: Bukowski said teachers had chosen a gardening/flower theme to symbolize growth together and that faculty would use common planning time over the summer to coordinate before the 2025–26 school year. She said students will be invited to plant a seed at the open house so they could take home a tangible reminder of the transition.
Board members responded with praise. Board member Miss Giddens said she “love[d] the new theme,” and Miss Hill said during her remarks that the faculty’s leadership was evident during a recent visit to the school. Ms. Edson thanked district staff involved in zoning work and recognized the effort it took to produce the plans that led to the student transfers.
No formal board action was taken on the presentation. The remarks and questions occurred during the presentation portion of the agenda; subsequent agenda items included separate votes on personnel, zoning and instructional materials.
