Monroeville Foundation plans larger Community Day, 5K and car cruise; jazz festival set for August

Ernie Groover, president of the Monroeville Foundation, told council on March 11 that the foundation is expanding its annual Community Day and seeking additional sponsorships to support a larger event and other community programming.
Groover said organizers anticipate more than 3,000 attendees for Community Day on June 7, expect nearly 90 artists and vendors, and plan to stage a 5K race followed by a car cruise and a community festival running roughly 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. He described the atmosphere as more carnival-like this year and said the car cruise drew about 80 cars last year.
“Due to social media, we've grown…we're currently anticipating over 3,000 people to attend,” Groover said. He told council that Forbes Hospital (Allegheny Health Network) and Highmark are major sponsors and that UPMC Health Plan has expressed interest in participating.
Groover said the foundation is also planning a jazz festival on Aug. 31 and is working to bring local media coverage to boost visibility. He asked council and the public to help recruit vendors and sponsors; there was no request for direct borough funding during his remarks.
Council members thanked him and some mentioned assisting with outreach to potential participants. The foundation’s timeline leaves about three months for vendor recruitment and sponsorship outreach before the June event.
