Student leaders ask board to fund more counselors, cite stretched guidance staff

Sarah Allen, student body president at Grace Creek High School, asked the Cumberland County Board of Education to consider expanding funding for additional school counselors at each school.
"Tonight, I asked the board to consider expanding funding for additional counselors at each school and all over across the district," Allen said, noting counselors are currently "stretched very, very thin." She told the board additional counselors would lower caseloads, allow counselors to build stronger relationships with individual students and improve access to academic and postsecondary planning.
Brock West, a senior and student body president at Terry Sanford High School, addressed the board earlier in the meeting and described student resilience and school spirit at his 112-year-old high school. West noted the value of stable leadership and school support for student success.
The board acknowledged the student remarks and recognized both students' families. No formal board action on counselor funding was taken during the meeting; funding decisions would be considered in the budget process.
