El Segundo Eagles softball returns with nine seniors, new coach Mayer at the helm

Several student-athletes credited long-term bonds among teammates for the team's outlook. "Having nine seniors since junior year has really made us connect," another student-athlete (Speaker 3) said, adding that the group has played together in rec and travel teams.
Coach Mayer took the head coaching job this offseason driven by the chance to coach his daughter in her final year, the recording said. Players said Mayer brings experience as a former player and has been a positive influence: "I think he knows a lot about softball ... his help out here with the girls has actually been really great for us," Speaker 7, a student-athlete, said.
Players also highlighted on-field depth and college opportunities. "I think we have 12 kids that are either already committed or assigned to play at the next level in college somewhere," Speaker 2, who also identified as a coach in the recording, said. Team members described contributions from starters and players on the bench and emphasized the tight-knit nature of the roster: "...this team feel[s] more like a family to me," Speaker 4 said.
Multiple speakers called the season a culmination of years of playing together in El Segundo's youth and travel programs, and said the team has higher expectations this year. "For us, winning league and also CIF always a big goal," Speaker 3 said.
