Deep Learning Virtual Academy students and leaders presented a student-made commercial and described steps they say have increased student engagement and testing participation.
At the March 10 board meeting of the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District, DLVA principal Dr. Smith told board members the school has prioritized partnerships between staff and families so more students take state tests and complete courses on time. “We needed to increase the number of students who were testing,” Dr. Smith said, adding that improved communication has “opened up those relationships” and resulted in “more kids completing classes and more kids on track to graduate in 4 years.”
Nut graf: The presentation highlighted a locally produced student advertisement and broader district-education goals. DLVA described the ad as a product of an in‑person event intended to deepen staff–family partnerships and improve data collection so instructional gaps can be identified.
Students explained the project and showed the ad. Eighth-grader Tina described producing the audio and coordinating with teammates: “I made a commercial audio, and I had to make the audio visual work together. Plus I had to work with new people, and that made the project even better.” Student Jocelyn St. John said student teams created the advertisement during a two-day in-person event; the team added Spanish subtitles using an online translator.
School leaders said DLVA holds in-person events twice a year and that the December event produced the commercial. Board member Sunny Nias Randall, who identified herself as a board member, praised Dr. Smith’s leadership and invited other board members to observe DLVA meetings to learn more about the program.
Board members applauded the students after the presentation and the board moved on to the superintendent’s report.
Ending: The board packet indicates DLVA will continue in-person events and district staff said they will monitor engagement and testing data in upcoming reports.
