Struthers mayor reports $15,000 donation, upcoming community events and volunteer smoke-alarm campaign

Mayor Catherine Chacon told the Struthers City Council on March 12 that the city received an additional $15,000 from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and outlined a series of upcoming local events and volunteer opportunities.
The additional $15,000 will add to other pending grant applications, Chacon said, and city staff have several applications outstanding to cover the full project total. "We actually just got another $15,000 from the Community Foundation of Mahoning Valley to add to that," Mayor Catherine Chacon said.
Why it matters: the funds are intended to supplement a package of grants the city has applied for; Chacon said multiple applications are pending although she did not specify the total target amount or the exact programs to be funded with the new donation.
Chacon also read a series of community announcements into the record. Items she listed included: St. Nicholas School moms' fish fries every Friday through April 11, dine-in or carryout for $15 at St. Nick's Great Hall; the Struthers Baseball League Night at the Races on Saturday, April 5, with races starting at 7 p.m., tickets $30 or $200 for a table of eight; a hygiene-product drive organized by high-school senior Gianna DeSalvo running through March 20 with drop-off locations at Struthers Middle School, the high school and City Hall; and a wine-tasting fundraiser on March 22 at 92 South Bridge Street with $15 tickets.
Chacon also summarized a regional volunteer opportunity run by the American Red Cross to install free smoke alarms and provide fire-safety education. The Red Cross is recruiting volunteers to work alongside local fire departments, with teams that include an installer and an educator/documenter. "No prior experience is necessary; they will provide all the training you will need upon arrival," Chacon said.
Council members did not raise questions about the announcements during the meeting. The mayor also said the city has other pending grant applications and that an updated listing of applications and pending awards is available from city staff, though she did not give exact totals for all pending grants.
Looking ahead: Council committees for community development and finance/legislation were scheduled to meet March 19 to review pending items and legislation.
