Debate highlights: Members raised competing concerns. Some board members preferred version 1 because it keeps students out of school for two full winter weeks and shortens the semester; others said two weeks off places a sudden childcare and scheduling burden on working families. Concerns were also raised about substitute-teacher availability if a large proportion of staff took Good Friday off. Several members proposed a compromise of a half day on Dec. 23; others rejected recurring half days as impractical.
Vote and next steps: Dr. Bryson moved to approve version 3 as the preferred draft; Mr. Samaha seconded the motion. The committee recorded four votes in favor and three opposed (Dr. McCauley, Mr. Golden and Mr. Ragsdale).
