Commission approves donation of sick and vacation leave for city employee

The Longwood City Commission on Jan. 20 approved a staff-requested donation of sick and/or vacation leave to a city employee, James (Jim) Apalardo. The motion passed 5-0.
Community Development Director Chris Kinnear described the request as a staff-driven effort to assemble roughly 400 hours of donated leave to support Apalardo, who experienced a significant personal hardship. Kinnear said several members of the department volunteered hours to help cover the employee’s absence.
Commissioner Tony Boney moved to approve the donation and Commissioner Matt Morgan seconded. The clerk recorded unanimous approval: Mayor Matthew McMillan, Deputy Mayor Brian Sackett, Commissioners Abby Shoemaker, Tony Boney and Matt Morgan voted yes.
Why it matters: The policy permits employee-to-employee leave donations in qualifying circumstances; commissioners noted the donation as a way the city workforce supports colleagues through difficult personal events.
