The Finance and Administration Committee approved and forwarded to the Board of Commissioners a five-year distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection and network upgrade agreement with Merit Network, replacing a prior three-year contract.
County IT staff explained the package includes new equipment, installation, network access and ongoing service and support. The upgrade moves the county—s connection from approximately 1 gigabit per second to 3 Gbps to support software-as-a-service applications, body-worn camera uploads and a courts pilot that will send audio and video to cloud services for transcription and AI-assisted processing. Officials said Merit offered the equipment at reduced or included cost if the county accepted a five-year term; the net additional annual expense to move from 1 Gbps to 3 Gbps was described in the meeting as about $8,900.
Commissioners asked whether increased bandwidth could reduce other transcription needs; staff said the courts pilot (in partnership with an Ohio county mentioned in the discussion) aims to streamline transcription workflows and may reduce some manual transcription demand.
The motion passed on a roll call vote and will be forwarded to the full board.
